What This Checklist Doesn’t Cover
Most no-start calls don’t actually need a Kohler generator dealer in CT. They need five minutes of inspection that most homeowners can do themselves. If your Kohler generator won’t start, begin with routine causes before assuming the machine died. In the quality logs I keep for a generator dealer in Connecticut, roughly 70% of the units returned as “no start” over the past two years were tripped breakers, dead batteries, a backwards air filter, or an ignition issue — not a failed generator.
I'm the quality/compliance manager at that dealer. I review Kohler standby and portable products before they ship, and I inspect units that come back from the field. In 2024, about 5% of the first-time installs I audited had something I considered a defect: a mislabeled transfer switch, a loose battery ground, or a missing manual. None would show on a load test. - Battery and charger. Does it crank? If not, start here.
- Fuel. Valve open? Tank full? Is the fuel older than eight to ten weeks?
- Air filter direction and condition. The arrow points toward the engine intake.
- Spark plug. Pull it, read it, gap it.
- Circuit breakers. Check the generator, transfer switch, and arc-fault circuit breakers in the house panel.

1. Battery First, Especially in Connecticut Winters
If the engine doesn’t crank, do not touch the carburetor before checking the battery. A standby generator is a 12-volt system. The controller, starter, and fuel solenoid all depend on the battery. Cold weather makes it worse. A battery that starts a Kohler unit every Sunday in July can be too weak on a 10-degree January morning.
Measure voltage at the battery posts, not the charger display. A rested, fully charged battery should be near 12.6 volts. Below about 11.5 volts, you have a charging problem or a connection problem. I’ve also seen a battery ground that looked tight but moved by hand; a $3 terminal cleaner fixed the no-crank complaint.
2. Which Way Does an Air Filter Go? Toward the Engine
Answer: on most Kohler generator engines, the airflow arrow on the air filter points toward the engine. If the filter has no arrow, the open side or wire mesh side seats inside the air box, and the pleated side faces the incoming air.
I have been on calls where a recently replaced air filter was installed backwards. It didn’t fully block the engine, but it created a small gap in the air box and let in unfiltered air. The result was hard cold starts, rough running, and stalling under load. Reinstalling the filter with the arrow toward the intake solved it.
If your unit uses a foam pre-cleaner, check that too. Too much oil on the foam makes the mixture rich and causes hard starts. The foam should be damp, not dripping.
3. Spark Plugs: The Honda EU2200i Example
If the engine cranks but doesn’t fire, pull the spark plug and read it. That rule applies as much to a large liquid-cooled Kohler as to a small portable generator. One reason the Honda EU2200i spark plug gets so much attention is that it’s often the difference between a dependable inverter and a frustrating one.
The Honda EU2200i calls for an NGK BPR6HS plug, or Denso W20EPR-U, with a gap of 0.6 to 0.7 mm (roughly 0.024 to 0.028 inches). If you buy a plug without checking the gap, you’re guessing. A visibly clean plug can still fail if the porcelain is cracked, the terminal is loose, or the gap has closed after being dropped or handled.
I learned this the hard way on my own EU2200i. It sat for a winter and then wouldn’t start. The plug was clean, so I kept chasing fuel and carburetor issues. When I finally measured the gap, it wasn’t right. I set it to 0.6 mm and the generator started on the second pull. I haven’t skipped that step since.
4. Circuit Breaker Arc Fault Trips: An Electrical No-Power Issue
This one is counterintuitive because the generator may crank and run while the building still has no power. A tripped breaker isn’t a generator failure, but it produces the same result: no electricity when you need it.
On a home standby system, check the breaker in the transfer switch and the main distribution panel. On a portable generator, check the built-in breaker and the GFCI outlets. In newer homes, arc-fault circuit breakers are common in bedrooms and living rooms. When a circuit breaker arc fault occurs, the handle sometimes sits in a soft middle position instead of snapping off.
Reset the breaker firmly to OFF, then ON. If it trips again with all loads unplugged, the issue is the circuit or the breaker itself, not the generator. Call a licensed electrician. Do not force the breaker on and do not bypass it.
5. When to Call Kohler Generator Dealers in CT
Call after you’ve ruled out battery, fuel, air filter, spark plug, and breakers. Also call if the controller shows a fault code, the unit locks out on low oil, or you hear a mechanical sound you can’t identify. No checklist fixes a failed controller.
When you talk to Kohler generator dealers in CT, ask whether the tech is factory-trained and whether the trip fee is applied to the repair. Write down the model/serial number, whether the engine cranks, the controller message, and what you already checked. That saves time and money.
For commercial emergency systems, this paperwork matters even more. Codes such as NFPA 110 expect documented testing and maintenance, so a no-start inspection should leave a paper trail.
What This Checklist Doesn’t Cover
I don’t have hard data on every Kohler model ever built; my numbers come from our region, our service records, and the units I personally reviewed. A generator with a controller error is different from one with a 10-year-old fuel system. Use this for the first five minutes, then call a professional if it still won’t start.
