My Unpopular Opinion: 'One-Stop' Suppliers Are a Liability for Rush Orders

When you need nylon conduit brackets, agro cable glands, or industrial flexible metal hose fast, a specialist supplier will beat a 'one-stop' generalist almost every time.

I know that sounds counterintuitive. Everyone loves the idea of a single vendor who can handle everything—conduit, fittings, hose, cable glands, you name it. But after seven years coordinating emergency procurement for an industrial electrical supply company, I've learned that 'we do everything' often means 'we do nothing particularly well.'

I've handled 300+ rush orders in that time, including same-day turnarounds for factory maintenance and agricultural clients. And the pattern is always the same: when the clock is ticking, the specialist wins.

Argument #1: Depth of Stock (Not Breadth) Saves Deadlines

Let's talk about a real scenario. In March 2024, a client called at 4 PM on a Thursday. Their irrigation system had failed, and they needed agro cable glands and industrial flexible metal hose for a repair. Normal turnaround was five business days. They had until Saturday morning.

People think expensive vendors deliver better quality. Actually, vendors who deliver quality can charge more. The causation runs the other way. Argument #3: The 'We Can Get It' Trap

This is the one that really gets me. When a generalist says 'we can get that,' what they usually mean is 'we'll call someone who actually stocks it.' You're now two layers removed from the inventory. Every layer adds delay and uncertainty.

My Advice: Build a Specialist Bench Before You Need It
