The question starts with price

It starts the same way every time. Someone from operations calls and says, “We need backup power.” Then, before I can ask about load, duty cycle, or fuel, they're asking me to compare kohler generator prices. That's normal. Price is the easiest thing to put in a spreadsheet.

The invoice eventually got paid, but the trust was never quite the same.

  • Check the generator room air filter MERV rating. MERV comes from ASHRAE 52.2. MERV 8 is common, MERV 13 is finer but adds pressure drop. Verify fan sizing before upgrading.
  • Watch for “super electric breaker booster box” solutions. That's not a standard electrical component. Use a properly rated transfer switch, breaker, and feeder.
  • Learn how a multimeter works. If you've ever asked “how does a multimeter work?” the short answer is that it measures voltage between two points and uses its own small current to measure resistance. Set it to AC voltage and check line-to-neutral and line-to-line readings. Write down the numbers.

That last point matters more than you'd think. A multimeter test takes five minutes and tells you if the generator is actually producing what the spec says. I don't trust the panel display alone anymore.

Bottom line

The generator you buy in good weather has one job: to save you in bad weather. If it can't do that, it doesn't matter what it costs.

I'd rather pay a little more for a generator that stays quiet and disappears from my problems. That's not a spec. It's peace of mind.
