After five years of buying parts and service for four Kohler generators—three commercial standby units and one marine generator—I can tell you the machine is the easy part. A $45 oil pressure switch turned into a $600 repair because we chose the wrong technician, and that pattern repeated itself across spark plugs, air filters, and dealer decisions. The generator itself is solid. Your real costs live in the parts and service decisions you make around it.
It's tempting to think you should just compare unit prices—for the generator, the parts, the service call. But from what I've seen, the total cost of ownership (i.e., what a part or service actually costs after you include downtime, repeat visits, and the "should've just called the right person" moments) is what matters. I'm not a technician. I'm the facilities buyer for a manufacturing company with roughly 200 employees. My job is managing all maintenance and equipment purchasing—about $250,000 a year across 8 vendors. During a routine service check, the dealer's tech pulled the spark plugs using a simple 5/8" spark plug socket tool with a rubber insert—the standard size for our Kohler engine. He checked each gap with a wire gauge. All eight were at 0.042". The spec in the manual calls for 0.030".
How does that happen? Usually because someone gapped them by eye instead of using a tool. It's tempting to think gapping a spark plug is too simple to need a gauge. But here's the thing: a too-wide gap creates weak ignition, rough idle, and higher fuel consumption. A too-tight gap misfires under load. The gauge costs about five dollars.
If you've never done it, gapping is genuinely easy: slide the appropriate thickness gauge between the center electrode and the hook-shaped side electrode. You want a slight drag when you slide it. If it's too tight or too loose, bend the side electrode gently—never pry on the center electrode—and recheck. That's it. Of course, verify the gap spec for your specific engine model first (note to self: the marine unit is different from the land-based ones).
Oh, and if you're buying a spark plug socket tool, get one that holds the plug with a rubber insert or magnet. We learned this after our regular shop cracked a ceramic insulator reaching for a plug in a recessed port. Cheap sockets lack the insert. The whole tool costs around ten dollars.
Lesson Three: The 20x20x1 Air Filter Isn't "Just" a 20x20x1 Air Filter
This one feels a bit ridiculous to write about, but it's real. The air intake louvers in our generator rooms take a standard 20x20x1 filter. That's the same size used in residential HVAC systems, so we started ordering the cheapest option and kinda treating it like office supplies—it's just a filter, right?
It isn't. During a hot-weather test run last summer, one of our standby units shut down on high coolant temperature. The cause: the cheap 20x20x1 filter had collapsed under airflow demand and restricted the cooling intake.
I assumed "same size" meant "same performance." It doesn't. The MERV rating and frame rigidity matter. A cheap filter sized for a home furnace blower isn't designed for the airflow volume a generator room needs, especially in an enclosure where intake air moves fast. Replacing them with a MERV 8 filter with a sturdier frame cost about six dollars more per filter. In the context of a $30,000+ generator, that's an insignificant amount—but it's a really easy thing to overlook.

Since I write and evaluate service contracts, people occasionally ask me how to become a Kohler generator dealer. If that thought has crossed your mind, here's what I've picked up from watching dealers work: it isn't a sign-up form.

If you're serious about becoming a dealer, the first realistic step is to assess whether you can support a certified technician and hold parts inventory. If you aren't prepared for that infrastructure, the dealership isn't the barrier—you are.
Where This Advice Doesn't Apply
Let me be honest about the limits of what I've said. Not every Kohler part needs to be OEM. For simple consumables—spark plugs meeting the spec, oil filters from quality brands—aftermarket parts are fine. Dealer labor isn't always necessary either. An oil change or a battery replacement can easily be handled by a competent local mechanic.
The distinction isn't "dealer good, independent bad." It's about whether the person doing the work understands the specific system they're touching. The oil pressure switch incident wasn't really about dealer vs. independent. It was about hiring someone who knows the failure modes of marine generator parts. If you ask the right questions before signing the work order ("Have you diagnosed a Kohler marine oil pressure switch issue before?"), you can get good results from an independent shop.
Also, if your generator is a nice-to-have rather than a business-critical system, you can accept more risk to save money. Our uptime requirements are strict because a failed start during an outage means downtime across our production line. If your situation is more forgiving, a cheaper, slower service arrangement may be a rational choice.
Kohler generators have earned their reputation. The five-year lesson is simple: the quality of your buying decisions determines the cost of your ownership. The $45 switch. The $10 socket. The $6 filter. None of these sound important until they become the reason your generator fails.
