Stop sourcing EV chargers and PV breakers like it's 2020

I manage procurement for a 150-person engineering firm—roughly $850k annually across 9 vendors. When I took over purchasing in 2020, buying an EV charger or a PV circuit breaker was straightforward: call a distributor, get a quote, place an order. That approach would cost you time and money today.

From the outside, it looks like vendors just need to work faster for rush orders. The reality is rush orders often require completely different workflows and dedicated resources—and many suppliers can't handle both high-volume and specialized requests without cutting corners.

What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The market for grid residential energy storage, EV chargers, and PV components has matured fast. The vendors who survived the supply chain disruptions of 2022–2023 are not the same ones who thrived before. And the old metrics—lowest price, fastest delivery—are no longer reliable indicators of value.

Why you can't rely on your existing supplier list

Our company expanded to a third location in 2023. I had to consolidate orders for 400 employees across 3 sites. That project forced me to reevaluate all our electrical component suppliers—and I found gaps I didn't expect.

What most people don't realize is that 'standard turnaround' often includes buffer time that vendors use to manage their production queue. It's not necessarily how long YOUR order takes. When I asked my regular supplier for a batch of leakage protection MCCBs and a specific EV charger OEM model, they quoted 8 weeks. Another specialist I'd never used quoted 3 weeks—and delivered in 2.

Here's something vendors won't tell you: the first quote is almost never the final price for ongoing relationships. There's usually room for negotiation once you've proven you're a reliable customer. But you can't negotiate on lead times the same way—if the production line is full, it's full.

The core issue: the market has shifted from 'buy anything available' to 'buy the right specification.' A PV circuit breaker manufacturer that was adequate three years ago may not meet today's efficiency or safety standards. An EV charger supplier OEM that passed certification in 2021 might not have updated for new grid interconnection requirements.

Three arguments for rethinking your procurement strategy

Argument 1: Specialization matters more than ever. In 2020, any distributor could sell you a 'compatible' grid residential energy storage unit. Today, the technology has fragmented. Different battery chemistries, inverter protocols, and grid codes mean a generalist vendor is more likely to get it wrong. I've seen administrators order the wrong voltage class of MCCB because their regular supplier didn't flag the discrepancy. Cost us $1,200 in restocking fees.

Argument 2: Certifications and compliance are moving targets. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), claims about product performance must be substantiated with evidence. That applies to energy efficiency claims, surge protection ratings, and safety certifications. When you're sourcing photovoltaic panel suppliers, you need to verify that the UL or IEC certification is current. Some suppliers will sell you panels with 2020 certifications that don't meet 2024's updated fire safety standards for rooftop installations.

Argument 3: Bulk purchasing hides quality problems. When I consolidated our orders, I went for a 'one-stop-shop' approach: one EV charger supplier OEM, one PV circuit breaker manufacturer, one grid storage vendor. The idea was to simplify logistics. What actually happened: the storage unit was fine, but the chargers had a firmware issue that took months to resolve. If we'd split the order between two specialists, we'd have gotten a better product from each category.

Why you might push back—and why I still disagree

I know some of you will say: 'Our current distributor handles everything fine. Why complicate things?' At least, that's been my experience with companies that have low product turnover or stable operational requirements. If you're ordering the same SKU quarterly and your facility isn't expanding, the old approach works—for now.

That said, the moment you need something slightly different—a specific EV charger OEM model for a new installation, a leakage protection MCCB with a different trip curve, or a grid storage unit that communicates with your existing inverter—you'll find the generalist vendor can't adapt. They'll quote a substitute or order from a subcontractor, adding markup and delays.

In my opinion, the extra upfront effort of vetting specialized vendors pays off faster than you'd think. I'd argue that even if your current mix seems stable, having pre-vetted alternatives for EV chargers, PV breakers, and storage components saves you the scramble when a project changes direction.

The fundamentals haven't changed, but the execution has transformed. You still need reliable suppliers, competitive pricing, and on-time delivery. But in 2025, achieving those basics requires accepting that the old rules for sourcing electrical components are due for revision—and that the cost of ignoring that change is higher than it used to be.
