Type “kohler generator” into a search engine and you get spec sheets and dealership listings. You rarely get the part that actually costs money: where installations and service calls go sideways. That’s what this article is about.

I’m a senior service technician who has handled Kohler generator installation and service orders for 11 years. I’ve personally made and documented 14 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $26,000 in wasted budget. I now maintain our team’s checklist so the next technician doesn’t repeat them. This FAQ is that checklist, minus the coffee stains.

How Do I Find “Kohler Home Generator Service Near Me” That Isn’t a Waste of Money?

If you’re considering an independent shop, ask these three questions before they come out:

  • Do your technicians carry Kohler diagnostic software, or do they troubleshoot without it?
  • Does the service visit include a battery load test and a transfer switch test?

In 2023, I took over a customer’s “serviced” generator that had only gotten oil changes for two years. The battery failed a load test and the transfer switch contacts were badly pitted. Kohler Generator Installation: What Does the Full Job Look Like?

In 2014, my first year in the field, I mounted a 20 kW air-cooled unit so the service access side faced the house wall. It looked tidy from the street. During the first annual service, I spent three hours reaching an oil filter that should have been a fifteen-minute job. We eventually disconnected the gas and electrical connections, rotated the unit, and commissioned it again. The lesson stuck: orient the generator for the person who will service it, not for the street view.

Kohler’s installation manuals include model-specific clearances and fuel pipe sizing tables. If an installer answers “that’s how we always do it” instead of opening the manual, get a second opinion. Installation problems usually don’t show up in week one. They show up in the middle of an outage.

Do I Need a 200A Transfer Switch?

If your house has a 200A main service, then yes. The automatic transfer switch sits between the utility and your main panel, which means it carries your entire house current whenever you are on utility power. A 20 kW generator only produces about 83A per leg at full load, but that doesn’t matter for the switch rating. The switch rating needs to match the main service.

A classic mistake is sizing the transfer switch from the generator breaker. A senior technician warned me about this during my first year. I thought a 100A switch would save the customer money because the generator breaker was only 70A. I didn’t listen. The project electrician rejected the switch at the job site, and we ordered the correct one. That change order cost about $1,100 plus a two-week delay. I only believed the rule after paying for it. Now every quote starts with the main breaker size, not the generator breaker.

If the generator feeds only a critical-load subpanel, the transfer switch is sized for that subpanel’s feeder. Whole-home backup with a 200A main usually means a 200A-rated switch. And if the generator can’t run every load at once, don’t undersize the switch—use Kohler’s load management modules to shed loads instead.

What Are Signs of a Bad Fuel Pump on a Generator?

First, check whether your generator has a fuel pump at all. Residential Kohler home generators fueled by natural gas or propane vapor do not have a traditional electric fuel pump. They rely on utility gas pressure or LP vapor pressure through a regulator and a fuel control valve. So when someone says your natural gas generator needs a fuel pump, ask where they measured gas pressure first.

On generators that do have fuel pumps—gasoline-powered units and some diesel systems—I look for these signs:

  • Engine cranks at normal speed but never fires because no fuel reaches the carburetor or injection pump.
  • Starts, runs for a short time, then dies like it ran out of fuel.
  • Runs fine with no load but sputters or stalls when you add load.
  • An electric pump is silent when it should click or prime.
  • Fuel pressure below spec at the test port.
  • Fuel smell or wet spots near the pump.

Just don’t replace the pump before checking the fuel level, shutoff valve, filter, and suction line. In September 2022, I replaced a lift pump on a diesel generator because the pressure was low. It still didn’t solve the problem; the suction line was letting air in. That was a $220 part plus a return trip. Test flow at the pump inlet before you condemn the pump.

What Does VFD Control Mean for a Generator?

VFD stands for variable frequency drive. It is common on modern heat pumps, pool pumps, water boosters, and commercial HVAC. The drive takes AC power, converts it to DC, and then creates a variable-frequency output to control motor speed. That’s great for energy use and soft starting. But the input side is not a clean resistive load. A VFD pulls current in bursts, which creates harmonics.

Those harmonics can distort the generator’s voltage waveform even when the generator is sized correctly by running watts. I underestimated that in April 2022. We had a building with multiple VFD-driven pumps. The generator was sized from motor nameplates and seemed fine. During the transfer test, drives went into fault when two of them ramped at the same time. Line voltage stayed within range, but the VFDs didn’t like the waveform. We installed input line reactors on the drives and rescheduled the commissioning. It cost about a week.

So if anyone asks me “what should I know about VFD control?” my answer is always: tell the generator vendor before the quote. A responsible installer will send the load list to the manufacturer’s application engineering group. If someone quotes a generator after only asking about square footage, they’re guessing. How Often Should a Kohler Generator Be Serviced?

At least once a year, and more often if the unit runs frequently or sits somewhere dusty. An engine that only runs during outages still needs oil changes, filter service, and battery care. A transfer switch that never moves can weld its contacts shut.

A thorough service visit should include:

  • Engine oil and filter service, plus the other items listed in that model’s maintenance schedule.
  • A battery load test, not just a voltage reading.
  • A fuel pressure or gas pressure check at the correct test point.
  • A transfer switch inspection and an actual transfer test under load.
