I coordinate emergency generator installs for a commercial distributor. When a business realizes at 4 p.m. on a Thursday that it needs power by Monday, I am the person who works out whether that is realistic. In the past six years I have handled maybe 280 rush jobs—closer to 300 if you count the smaller ones; I stopped keeping exact count around 2023. The checklist below is the order I actually use when the deadline is real.
A quick example before the list. Last March, a printing plant called at three in the afternoon needing a code-compliant standby generator before a fire marshal walkthrough on Monday. We made it, but there was overtime, a rush freight charge, and one very tired electrician. The same job scheduled a month earlier would have cost roughly 25 percent less. This checklist assumes a standby generator in the 10–100 kW range: a commercial building, farm, or large residential setup. Small portables follow similar logic but are simpler.

Walk through the loads the generator will actually serve: refrigeration, server racks, sump pumps, lights, security, a furnace or well pump. Add the starting watts, not just the running watts. A motor that draws 3 amps while running can pull 12 or 15 amps for the first second or two. A generator sized to the running load will trip when the largest motor starts.
Write that number in kW on paper. It is the spec every quote should be based on.

Diesel that sits for months grows bacteria and drops water into the bottom of the tank. That water finds the fuel filter, and once the filter is saturated, the engine sputters or stops. A fuel filter can look clean on the outside and still be full of sludge and water.
So before you sign anything, budget for the service schedule. On a diesel standby unit, plan an annual fuel filter and water separator service before the first storm season. On a gas or LP unit, check the air filter and keep spare filters on hand. It sounds like a small line item, but it is the one that keeps the lights on.

To be fair, Generac has a massive installed base and a strong service network in many areas. Kohler brings a commercial and industrial background, and its standby line is built around reliability and dealer support. Many negative reviews come from installations that were undersized, wired poorly, or never maintained. Review the dealer as carefully as you review the brand.

It does not include the transfer switch, concrete pad, fuel piping, electrical labor, permits, or commissioning. Step 4: How to install generator transfer switch: our checklist
Every standby generator larger than a portable cord-and-plug unit needs a listed transfer device. The transfer switch stops the generator from backfeeding the utility and endangering lineworkers. Here is the procedure our licensed electricians follow.
- Pull the permit first. Most jurisdictions require an electrical permit and inspection. If you skip it and something goes wrong, the insurance conversation gets much harder.
- Lock out the service. Turn off the main breaker, verify the panel is dead with a meter, and in many cases have the utility pull the meter before work starts.
- Size the switch for the calculated load, not the size of the panel. A 200 A panel can be served by a 100 A rated transfer switch when the generator and calculated load are smaller. Oversizing by panel rating is not a sin, but it wastes money and sometimes creates neutral and ground issues.
- Mount the switch in the right place. For a whole-building standby system, the transfer switch goes between the utility service and the main panel. For selected circuits, the switch must have enough spaces for the breakers protecting those circuits.
- Make the line, load, and generator connections in the right order. Label every conductor. Torque the lugs to the manufacturer's specification, not just “until it feels tight.”
- Check the neutral-ground bond. In a service entrance install, the neutral-ground bond belongs at the first disconnecting means. If the transfer switch is the first disconnect, it often carries that bond. If the switch is downstream of a main breaker, the bond must not be duplicated. Double bonding is one of the most common inspection failures we see.
- Run the control wiring. Automatic transfer switches need control wires to the generator so the unit starts when the utility fails. Follow the wiring diagram in the generator manual; terminal locations vary by manufacturer.
- Test before you call it done. Simulate an outage by opening the main breaker, let the generator start and pick up the load, then transfer back. Watch voltage and frequency during the test.
I will be honest: I do not encourage building owners to install a transfer switch themselves. In most locations, this work requires a licensed electrician and an inspection. The checklist helps you ask the right questions and spot a contractor who is cutting corners.
Step 5: Add surge protection at the panel
People often ask whether a Generac surge protector only works with a Generac generator. It does not. A whole-home surge protector installs at the electrical panel and protects the loads in the building. We fit panel-mount surge protectors on Kohler generator installations as well. The surge protector should be part of the same project as the transfer switch. Relying on power strips is not the same thing; a panel-level protector handles the larger surge before it reaches sensitive electronics.
Step 6: Test under load before you truly need it
When we commission a new generator, the technician runs it under real building load for at least 60 minutes. A five-minute no-load run is not a test. The transfer switch has to move the load, the generator has to accept it, and voltage and frequency have to stay stable while large motors cycle on and off.
If the building cannot supply a realistic load, ask for a load bank test. It costs more, but it is far cheaper than discovering the problem during an actual outage.
Mistakes I see on rushed jobs
- Buying on upfront price alone. The cheapest proposal is usually missing scope: no pad, no permits, no commissioning, no maintenance plan. By the time you add those items, the gap shrinks or disappears.
- Skipping the maintenance schedule. A generator is like a fire extinguisher: it has to work on the one day you ignore it. Budget for annual oil, filter, and battery service from the start. That includes the fuel filter service mentioned in Step 2, whether the unit is new or five years old.
- Leaving no time buffer. After a February 2023 job went sideways because the schedule had zero slack, our policy changed. We now require at least 48 hours of buffer before a hard deadline. A generator can fail its load test on a Friday afternoon. When that happens, you want Tuesday as the real deadline, not Monday morning.
Bottom line: the decisions that make or break an emergency generator happen before the emergency. Define the load, plan the fuel and filter service, compare total costs, install the transfer switch correctly, protect the panel, and test under load.
