Not so fast. Line items kept showing up after the quote landed:

- Permit and inspection coordination — $650 (excluded)
- Commissioning and load bank test — $1,250 (excluded)
- Wiring from the transfer switch to our main panel — $2,100 (excluded)
By the time I added those to the Cummins price, it read $44,300 — roughly $3,100 more than the Kohler quote. The Kohler dealer had simply quoted the full project: pad, wiring, permits, testing, everything. I nearly signed a contract that saved money up front and cost us later. But we have a three-story elevator, a drafting server room that peaks around 14 kW, and electric heat pumps on the west wing. Would I have bought Cummins? Sure, under different circumstances. If our maintenance shop already stocked Cummins/Fleetguard filters, the TCO math shifts. If the local Cummins dealer had been more responsive in my test, I'd have held both brands to the same standard. And if we were setting up an RV park where Onan service parts were already the norm, the answer would have been right there.
One friend at another architecture firm runs a Kohler 60kW and swears by it. Another, in warehousing, uses Cummins across three sites and wouldn't switch. They made different calls and both are right, because their vendor math was different from ours.

Both generators are excellent. Kohler won our comparison because the quote was complete, the standard product met our noise requirements, and the Duxbury dealer showed up — literally and figuratively — when I tested them with a random PF-3001 fuel filter question.
